Art Basel Statements 2025
For Art Basel Statements 2025, German artist Edith Deyerling will present Into the Mirror, an immersive installation of newly conceived paintings whose presentation is inspired by Roberto Matta’s exhibition at the Maison de la Culture in Amiens (1973). A trained architect, Matta conceived this installation to trigger an immersive experience for the viewer, way ahead of digital projections.
Interested in constructing a mesmerizing world with analog tools, Deyerling will show seven works staged as a layered theatrical installation each intertwining and connecting. While some works operate as sculptural elements projected into the room, others extend from the walls looking down from above. The individual compositions additionally reinforce the spatial effect of the tilting. By being tilted, skewed and hung from the ceiling, the works exit their medium-specific two-dimensional character and distance themselves from the conventional perception of painting. Following her interest in the multitude of compositions, the new series of works will be painted with UV pigments that, triggered by UV lights, illuminate the paintings, revealing a hidden layer within. This second layer remains unseen at first glance, but can partly be experienced with a UV flashlight.
Edith Deyerling’s paintings employ home-mixed pigments that are prepared through a traditional method involving the use of linseed oil. Further the artist uses airbrush, as well as acrylics. Features that tend to repeat across Deyerling's mostly abstract works include sign-like shapes, often depicting various body parts–hands, faces, and specifically eyes–as well as thin lines that spread out in formations across the surface.
