Liste 2022
As an artist and filmmaker, Tiffany Sia’s work begins from a process of writing, research and building from an archive of video works, audio clips and transcribed conversations that culminate in explorations on temporality, the politics and relations of media circulation and placehood. Films such as Never Rest/Unrest (2020) and Do Not Circulate (2021) grapple with the meaning of new media as a tool for new oral history, playing with aspect ratios to challenge cinematic language and the documentary form. Her book Too Salty Too Wet 更咸更濕 (2021) assembles a nonlinear narrative, beginning from the frontlines of the Hong Kong protests in 2019 to weaving a reflection on the relationship between the spectacle and apocalypse, to the history of Hong Kong as a port city, and to a deeply personal family history that strikes at heart of reflecting on time observed as violently lived.
Assembled as an exploration of haptic relations between screens and text, the presentation at Liste 2022 consists of a photographic work displayed as a lightbox and four video works, featuring text unfurling in the style of a teleprompter, glazed over with a security film that prevents viewers from looking at the screens any other way than straight on.
