Jenna Bliss, New Delivery/Gangway (chat), 2017 & 2019, Super8mm film and video, 01:39 min. looped, Ed. 3 + 1 AP

Created for miart 2024 as a commission by MSGM, Jenna Bliss will present a site-specific installation for the entrance to the exhibition. For this edition, Bliss (b. 1984, Yonkers, New York)–last year's winner of the inaugural Massimo Giorgetti Award–will welcome visitors with a series of screens displaying her video works.

Jenna Bliss explores the political dimensions inherent in our ways of seeing and telling stories. In her practice, she primarily uses film, photography, sculpture, and collage. Her works are characterized by detailed research into often overlooked and marginal topics that nevertheless reflect major global events. Bliss employs research and intuitive associations to sift through collective memory, questions common assumptions, and thus expands an accepted narrative. Through the montage of self-filmed, found, and archival footage in the form of text and images, Bliss elicits inherent ideologies from the material and reveals historical links that are invisible at first glance.

Presented are four video works from 2017–2024 that cull footage from the artist’s ongoing archive of Super 8mm film. The epigrammatic yet conversational text in the films debate essential questions about life in both public and private realms.

Bliss’s first institutional solo exhibition in Germany is on view at Haus am Waldsee in Berlin through 5 May 2024.
